Any sand, gravel, clay, peat, or similar extraction and/or processing operation in Brazeau County must have the appropriate zoning and a valid Development Permit before work can begin. These requirements ensure that operations are properly reviewed and meet both municipal and provincial regulations.
Aggregate operations are generally classified based on size. Larger operations (5 hectares or more) require both municipal approval and provincial approval through Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. Smaller operations (less than 5 hectares) require municipal approval and must still meet applicable provincial regulations. All operations must comply with the County’s bylaws and policies, particularly the Land Use Bylaw, and applicable provincial legislation. Please refer to the Planning and Development page for information on applying for a Natural Resource Operation Development Permit.
Community Aggregate Payment Levy
Brazeau County collects a Community Aggregate Payment Levy on sand and gravel shipped from pits within the County, in accordance with the Municipal Government Act. The levy helps offset the impact of aggregate hauling on municipal infrastructure, particularly roads. All operators are required to submit a quarterly report, including periods with no activity, within 30 days of the end of each quarter.
The reporting form and a copy of the bylaw are available below. For questions regarding reporting requirements or submissions, please contact Public Works at 780-542-7777 or publicworks@brazeau.ab.ca.
