Permanent Electors Register to be implemented for 2025 Municipal Election
This October voters will need to be on a permanent electors register in order to cast a ballot in the municipal election.
One of the changes to the Local Authorities Election Act introduced by the Province in October 2024 is the requirement for each municipality to create a permanent electors register for municipal elections. Eligible voters will need to appear on the electors register to cast their ballot on Election Day. Those who do not appear on the register on Election Day will be required to fill out a form to be added to the permanent electors register.
Voters are asked to visit voterlink.ab.ca to see if they are already registered, update elector information or register to vote. Voters unable to use the online portal may also register by phone by contacting Voterlink toll free at 310-0000 and then dialing 780-427-7191.
The permanent electors register is being created in partnership with Elections Alberta using information from the provincial electors database and supported with information from Brazeau County. The municipal electors register is not a public document and will not be available to candidates or members of the public.
Brazeau County is required to share its electors register with Elections Alberta and the provincial database may be shared with registered political parties, provincial candidates and members of the Legislative Assembly. At this time there is no option to opt out of being on the permanent electors register for those who wish to vote in the municipal election.
If an eligible voter’s name does not appear on the permanent electors register when they arrive at the voting station on Election Day they will be required to fill out a form. They will then be given a ballot and their information will be added to the electors register.
Voters are being encouraged to make sure they appear on the electors register prior to Election Day as this will make things at the voting station faster and more efficient.
