Special ballots will once again be available to voters for the 2025 Municipal Election.
At its meeting on July 15 Brazeau County Council approved the use of special ballots for the
October 20, 2025 election.
For 2025, changes to the Local Authorities Election Act have made special ballots open to
anyone who isn’t able to vote on Election Day or at either of Brazeau County’s advance
votes. In previous elections voters had to meet specific criteria to apply to vote by special
ballot.
Those interested in using a special ballot to vote must first apply to Returning Officer
Jasmine Nuthall at election@brazeau.ab.ca or 780-920-3537. Once the voter has been
registered a special ballot package will be sent to the address provided after nominations
have been closed and an election declared. It is the voter’s responsibility to have the
completed package, including sealed ballot, copy of identification, certification of vote,
and any other required forms, back to the returning officer by the close of voting (8 p.m.) on
Election Day.
Arrangements will need to be made with the returning officer for drop off of
special ballot packages. Any packages received after the close of voting on Election Day, or
any incomplete packages will be considered a rejected ballot.
Once a completed special ballot package is received and verified by the returning officer
the sealed ballot envelope is placed in the ballot box. Special ballots are not opened and
counted until the close of voting on Election Day.
Anyone voting by special ballot will receive a package by mail or can arrange to be picked
up in person from the returning officer at the Brazeau County Administration Office. Each
package will include instructions for voters on how to complete the package and vote.
Special ballots will be write-in and voters will be provided a list of the candidates they are
eligible to vote for.
Voters can apply for a special ballot package at any time to have it sent once nominations
close.
For more specifics on the use of special ballots please reference the Local Authorities
Election Act sections 77.1 to 77.3.

Considering running for municipal council can be a big decision with lots of things to consider. To help prospective candidates Brazeau County has put together nomination/candidate information packages.
Packages include high level information about responsibilities of elected officials, campaigning, Election Day and the Local Authorities Election Act. The packages also include relevant bylaws and policies about Council remuneration and meeting procedures.
These information packages are not intended to be a complete guide for candidates. It is a candidate’s responsibility to become familiar with the Local Authorities Election Act and make sure they are following all necessary regulations. Copies of the Act are available through Alberta King’s Printer, or on request to the returning officer.
Hard copy packages are available at the front desk of the Brazeau County office. Digital copies of the handbook only are available on Brazeau County’s election webpage. The County’s bylaws and policies can also be accessed on its website at brazeau.ab.ca.
For any questions prospective candidates are asked to contact the Returning Officer, Jasmine Nuthall, at election@brazeau.ab.ca or 780-920-3537.
