Historic Voyageur Route Brings Racers To Brazeau County
Hundreds of people came to the Willey West Campground July 2 to watch the teams competing in the Canada 150 Voyageurs Rendezvous Canoe Race arrive at the boat launch.
The Voyageurs Rendezvous Canoe Race began July 1 in Rocky Mountain House and will end in The Pas, Manitoba, following an epic 1,600 kilometer route along the North Saskatchewan River. The 23-day adventure features North Canoe race teams from across the country celebrating Canada’s sesquicentennial, bringing a rich piece of Canadian history back to life for all Canadians.
Participants enjoyed First Nations drumming, dancing (including a round dance), and canoe sprints on the North Saskatchewan River. Reeve Bart Guyon, Deputy Reeve Maryann Thompson, and Councillor Shirley Mahan were on hand to welcome the paddlers and serve food and water, and hand out Brazeau County souvenirs.
