Family and Community Support Services began in the Province of Alberta in 1966. At that time, the Province established a cost sharing agreement with municipalities across the province to ensure that programs were available to prevent families from reaching crisis situations and entering the social services system. Today, the focus is preventative social services!
That means programs that help communities and individuals to develop independence and resistance to crisis, develop awareness of social needs, develop interpersonal and group skills and assume responsibility for decisions. Although the province stipulates as part of our agreement that we must provided only preventative social services, each community gets to choose how they will deliver their programs and the programs they best suit their own community needs. DV & District FCSS has an appointed Board of Directors representing various sectors of the community as well as two staff members delivering the program on a day to day basis. In order to meet the needs of our own community, DV and District FCSS focuses on three main areas for program delivery.
First, we help initiate programs. That means that we may start or help to start a program if we see a need in the community.
Secondly, we coordinate and partner, meaning that we work with other agencies, organizations or individuals on projects in the community.
Finally, we provide information, education or funding to groups that provide services within the community that fall within our guidelines for service delivery.
Aside from all of these things, we also have resources available in the Drayton Valley Municipal Library for people to access or you can contact us if you are seeking a specific community resource and are not sure where to find it.
